Luna, Apayao- Two barangay officials in Sta. Lina, Luna, Apayao surrendered a Brahminy Kite Hawk, more popularly known as Lawin, to DENR-CENRO, Apayao after it was found wounded.
The Brahminy Kites(Lawin) fall under the category of “Other Wildlife Species” and must be conserved and protected. This hawk has distinctive and contrasting colours, with chestnut like feathers except for its white head and breast and black wing tips.
The said bird is being treated at the DENR-CENRO, Apayao office. The office said the hawk shall be released back to its natural habitat once it has full recovered.
According to Dr. Lei Robelle Domingo of the Provincial Veterinary Office, a concerned resident in said barangay has spotted the wildlife in their property's vicinity on January 31, flightless and distressed.
Upon discovering the bird's state, the man promptly handed it over to the barangay hall, which later the barangay kagawads Reynaldo Miguel and Billy Joel Sapad being on duty brought it to DENR-CENRO.
The office concerned with preserving the bird's life promptly called the PVO for provision of appropriate medical treatment. It was Dr. Lei Robelle Domingo, Dr. Leitleton Tadena and Dr. Freeland Columna of PVO-Apayao who immediately responded and provided essential medicines. After careful diagnosis, the hawk was found with a 3-4 mm stab wound with hematoma on its right wing caudal to the ulna.
In instances like this, the DENR-CENRO reminds the public to report and turnover any wildlife discovered under distress to authorities for proper handling and rehabilitation before they are released back to their natural habitat.
Meanwhile, the DENR-CENRO and PVO expressed their commendation to the initiative exemplified by said resident for his involvement in the conservation and preservation of wildlife in the province.
